"You may think of operating systems as something you install once and leave on a hard drive. But not every OS needs to tie itself down to a machine. Portable operating systems are designed to run directly from a USB stick, external drive, or even a CD. They boot up quickly, don’t require installation, and often weigh in from a few megabytes up to a few hundred megabytes."

A peek at the new issue of Marginalia next to its inspiration. I'll be sending it to Collectors-tier patrons at the end of the month, and there's a few spots left!

A zine with a black cover, and a sad, turnip-like entity based on some Medieval marginalia. The original Medieval drawing of the previously mentioned turnip.

Good morning fedi! 🌞

Back when I bought my iMac G5 as a grad student, I could never have afforded Macromedia Director - even with its heavily discounted “academic” license.

finally acquired it today, complete, so I can begin turning my upcoming book Mages & Modems, into an interactive ebook.

it has been decades since I last worked with Director and I can’t wait to get started.

A very large and heavy box containing Macromedia Director 7 for PowerPC macs. A 20-inch iMac G5 is in the background.

Just got my covid and flu boosters, and my wi-fi is better already! 📡

Over the course of 24 dungeons in , you'll meet various monsters. The first creature you'll encounter is a giant bat. Their flightpath makes them hard to hit, but they are not particularly strong, so they won't be doing that much damage. Once you find a dagger or a wand, you'll be dealing with them easily. Bats occasionally pick up treasures and move them around. You can download the game from https://cyningstan.itch.io/ossuary

Our hero, starting on level 1, encounters their first bat. The hero can probably take down the bat bare-handed, but it will take quite a few turns, as the damage the hero causes will be minimal. Once a blade or a wand is found, the bats can be dealt with much more quickly. A bat is enlarged in the inset.

Experimenting with a "community" search engine to search all the RPG blogs on the RPG Planet.
https://campaignwiki.org/rpg/search

It seems to work and the database is around 70M (SQLite full-text search, stripped of HTML tags).

Now I'm wondering about importing older blog posts that aren't listed in the feeds. I managed to get an export of the complete RSS file for my RPG posts (1347 of them) and managed to import them all. 😲

As always, if you have an RPG blog that isn't listed, let me know and I'll add it.

I've just done a huge update to events on Seedbomb with big thx to @koleh and our DJS crew.

https://seedbomb.au

Check it out folks, there are so many great events listed there now!! More to come once @bounding_star @adlspadmin get their hands on this update.

Have something u wanna get added?
DM @bounding_star or me :)

Currently the site just supports events for those living on so called South Australian. We have interest to add other places in future.

RSS never tracked you.
Email never throttled you.
Blogs never begged for dopamine.
The old web wasn’t perfect.
But it was yours.

This gives me such joy. Two guests enjoying a game of terminal ASCII on the primitive at last weekends retro gaming event in Cambourne.

Two people smiling as one is playing a Pac Man like game on the Altair 8800.

There is a small crappy LCD monitor sitting on top of the computer and that itself is sitting on top of the floppy drive unit. In front is a compactor keyboard.

Hack the Planet blob_floppy

Oh, forgot to upload this one.
We also had a small core memory module under magnifying glass on show.

32 bytes, if I count correctly.

Memory core organized in an 8x32 grid of magnetic toroids. On the side, terminals connecting the wires that go through the toroids can be seen. The toroids are under a transparent covering Photo of the module seen from farther away, showing red and yellow wires connected

Rally Photos: NAZIS OFF OUR STREETS: SOVEREIGNTY NEVER CEDED

There was a very strong community spirit among the demonstrators who attended the First Nations Sovereignty National Day of Action in Boorloo/Perth. The theme of the rally and the march was: "Nazis Off Our Streets". Several speakers at the end of the march commented positively at the size of the rally, which was about 500 to 1000 people. Even though the march was quite a distance--all the way from King's Park…
