This was the book that single handedly got me into computers and programming.

It still captures my imagination today.

Fantasy games for your microcomputer book cover. Has the dungeon of doom BASIC code listing in it.

@vidak I remember the game looked nothing like the cover haha

@vidak that would have won me over yeah.

Mine was a second hand copy of this, and a hand me down Atari (and, later, qbasic)

Computer monsters. It's a type in basic book. There's a green monster on the cover.

@vidak this was mine

Adventures With the Atari, Jack B. Hardy.

A sorcerer on a grid landscape stands in front of an abstract microcomputer waving a stave, with various beasts, a spaceship and castle pouring out of it.

@vidak I got this as a gift because I already was trying to get into computers and game programming, and I still have a copy <redacted> decades later. A couple other books were gifted me at the same time, but this is the one that got me actually going with C++. (So author Christopher Lampton probably owes me for a life of pain and despair, but anyway.)

Cover of the book "Gardens of Imagination" by Christopher Lampton. The cover depicts a hedge maze with an orange sky, and images of flowers and a butterfly superimposed. Additional cover text reads, "Programming 3D Maze Games in C/C++" and "Includes Sample Game, Design Utilities, Source Code, and More!"

@mdhughes @vidak creative computing books for me too!

@vidak The Usborne books inspired a generation of programmers! I've still got my ones from when I was a kid...

Six Usborne computing books from the 1980s

@quazarsamcoupe @vidak those were and are great books. they show you how you can provide great entertainment with very basic resources. the illustrations are great as well.

@quazarsamcoupe @vidak I still have three of these on my bookshelf today - my own originals from new!

@vidak I've still got this one on my bookshelf

Usborne book, "Practical things to do with a microcomputer"

@quazarsamcoupe @vidak @Wintermute_BBS still got 2 myself - Better Basic and Computer SpaceGames

Usborne programming books from the 1980s - Better Basic and Computer SpaceGames

@quazarsamcoupe @vidak I loved the artwork in these books and was always disappointed the actual game could never live up to them! 😁

I'm pretty sure you can download most of these as they made them free in PDF format on the official Usborne site.

@UKFilmNerd @vidak

The artwork was fantastic, especially in the Islands of Secrets and The Mystery of Silver Mountain to show the locations and characters in the adventures.

The books can be found here:

@quazarsamcoupe @vidak yeah, amazing stuff

@quazarsamcoupe@mastodonapp.uk @vidak@social.solarpunk.au Oh cool, I didn't realise there were others in this series until now! What a great piece of nostalgia, thank you 🙂

I got a copy of 'Introduction to Computing Programming' from a stall at my primary schools fair. Remember being absolutely fascinated with it at the time. Wish I had it still, along with a couple of other books that got lost on the way.

@quazarsamcoupe @vidak Definitely where I started. I loved these books.
