i still am of the opinion that most fedi drama is caused by instances being too big.
instances should only be like 5-10 accounts, everything above is too big.
you shouldn't give accounts on any instance to people you don't personally know.
open signup instances are bad and shouldn't exist.
the majority of instances should be single user instances.

@sammy But what if you want to join Mastodon and have neither the technical ability nor finances to set up your own instance, nor know anyone with one?
meta
@retrosponge you don't "join mastodon" first of all
you learn how to set up a gotosocial instance on a free or very cheap vps and get a domain for less than 10 bucks a year
re: meta
@sammy @retrosponge yeah we would never do that cause it would overwhelm the fuck out of us. you know how we even know a bunch of people that can do this? fedi. if this was our options 98% of the folks on fedi would have never been on here and this would just be a handful of tech nerds that haven't yet gotten sick of talking to no one but the few other tech nerds they know.
re: meta
im on a selfhosted instance but spent 3 years on big instances, if they didnt exist then i wouldnt be here lmao
meta
@sammy there used to be a convention where you deleted your account @ 1000 followers
I see it is never followed now

@vidak I've been on fedi for a long time and I've never heard of that, and it doesn't really have anything to do with my post
I'm speaking about big instances, by user count, not big accounts, by follower count
