the main thing i always end up endlessly stressing over with my retro computer designs is video display
does anyone know of any good designs for composite out video for say, a 6502 or 68k CPU based micro?
many thanks in advance.
@vidak you need color?
@wyatt8740 not necessarily!
@vidak
How about VGA? Ben Eater made a VGA Output with discrete ICs and a ROM (which could be a RAM instead)
@h3 i've been thinking about doing the MC6847 just because i am a massive fanboy
@vidak
If modern chips are not an issue and there's SPI or something SPI like available, then the funny SRAM with bonus composite video generation chip from VLSI could be an option?
VS23S010 is LQFP48 and the interface is SPI.
or "8-bit Parallel Interface (Simplified 8080)"

VS23S010D-L can also do analog RGB video in addition to composite, but is only available in BGA.

@ftg thank you for such a helpful response.
i have purchased some MC6847s just to play around with for now while i refamiliarise myself with physically constructing digital electronics
was also informed about don lancaster's cheap video cookbook, which i am currently stepping through and is proving useful
it is my hope i will be able to design the simplest circuit possible for composite video output, so that when i try and popularise the permacomputer project further, people will be able to join in along by themselves.

@vidak
Whatever works, can be easily acquired and easily used. :)
Delightfully, Archive.org has cheap video cookbook, so I'll take a look at that one as well.
