pretty much no-one i know understands anything i find interesting--computers, philosophy...
it ranges from polite indifference, to ignoring when i raise the topic, to outright mocking.
i think it is a function of australia's toxic anti-intellectualism, we call it 'tall poppy syndrome'. which is meant to be a label that criticises it, but quite a few aussies i have met are enthusiastic about cutting down every tall poppy they see.
it is very frustrating having to do everything by yourself, knowing no-one else will join in. it has been like this since ny first memories.
australia is probably one of the most conformist white colonial nations i know. difference is treated with hostility. it is not the laid hack hippie surfer country AT ALL
@vidak I get it. Where I live there isn't a scene that I know of that is into FOSS and such. It is apple, or microsoft.
Every time I mention something about Microsoft did, my friends are like we get it notptr you hate Microsoft.
I also made a guy angry on bluebook social that the link of chatgpt and encouraging people to use it was a waste of water and electricity.
I also tried to get local people to use fedi and that failed. Everything is entrenched with bluebook social.

i have given up trying to seek out others in person in my city anymore as it usually always goes badly
@vidak I live in the third largest city of the state but the FOSS community I know of live in another city two hours away.

@vidak yeah, I stay out of tech talk among people outside fedi.
Most what they talk about is boring most of the time.
Like what graphics card should I get and very low knowledge of how programming works in a video game.
@vidak yeah, at least when I talk about doom their eyes don't glaze over it just the foss and linux stuff.
@notptr in retrospect, and on a more positive note, i am really glad i found the fedi. it set me free a little, knowing i was not alone.
@vidak yeah, fedi was a major improvement for me. I wanted to talk about weird tech stuff and fedi was the only place that I got convo on them.
@notptr it is kafkaesque. it is as if they have the same, very clear idea of what is normal/acceptable
