Thanks to everyone who came to my talk about Off-Grid Data Running in Oppressive Regimes with the Pirate Box and Sneakernet! This was such a massive boost to my life and to my drive! I hope we can all make the world better by helping people in need get the data and info they need!

Shout out to @TheSlugNoodle for the action shot! hackers_town

Round 2 Match 1!
Nominated by: @rcgj_OxPhys , @McCrankyface , @demonshreder ,
@thedaemon , & me!

We're now pairing winners off against each other! These matches will last a single day, to keep the tournament running smoothly.

Btw I'm considering pairing the runners-up in their own polls, since some of those were very tight!

@vidak in USD, 10-15 year old Panasonic Toughbooks and Toughpads are pretty good. Tough, (it's in the name!) with replaceable parts. Serviceability is good. Some models, mostly in specialty form factors, use proprietary or oddball parts, so research is a good idea. Panasonic seems to be good about driver availability, but seems to hold technical documentation close, so dock port or other pinouts are hard to find. Batteries are field replaceable, even sometimes using a two-battery design or a bridge-battery for hot-swap.

As some guys of you asked me to provide a (13) final image as a compatible container template... There you go:

@vidak loke the original @pine64 / ?

  • Fuck yeah!

Sadly that was discontinued, but you should be able to some -y thing with new COTS parts like a (2), cheap LCD, Powerbank and Keyboard/Trackpad in like a Pizza box.

  • Not great but good enough…

Australia's Fortescue secured a yuan-denominated loan worth 14.2 billion Chinese yuan ($1.98 billion) to ramp up its decarbonisation plans, weeks after scrapping its $550 million green hydrogen project with the U.S. due to policy uncertainty.

It only took me about two years, but My DEC J11 is actually running and executing code!

A small blue PCB with a very distinctive white and gold ceramic IC (really two gold ICs on a ceramic carrier) - which is the DEC J11, effectively that's an entire PDP11 on a chip.

Hooked up to the PDP11 is a Tang Nano 20k

The system is connected up to a 2011 MacBook air, running Ubuntu. On the display is a terminal emulator - with a very distinctive Mandelbrot set displayed - as computed by the J11

Steve Wozniak interviewed for CBS:

"I gave all my Apple wealth away because wealth and power are not what I live for. I have a lot of fun and happiness. I funded a lot of important museums and arts groups [...] I never look for any type of tax dodge. I earn money from my labor and pay something like 55% combined tax on it. Life to me was never about accomplishment, but about Happiness. I developed these philosophies when I was 18-20 years old and I never sold out."

Pakistan pulled off one of the fastest solar revolutions in the world by importing cheap panels from China.

What’s happening here undermines an increasingly popular narrative that clean energy is unaffordable, unwanted and can only succeed with large-scale government subsidies.

https://www.cnn.com/2025/05/01/climate/pakistan-solar-boom

This is a bar chart titled "China's solar panel exports to Pakistan, gigawatts."

The x-axis represents years from 2017 to 2024, and the y-axis represents gigawatts, ranging from 0 to 15.

The data is presented as a series of vertical bars:

    2017: The bar is slightly above 0, roughly 0.5 gigawatts.

    2018: The bar is just below 1 gigawatt.

    2019: The bar is just above 1 gigawatt.

    2020: The bar is around 1.5 gigawatts.

    2021: The bar is around 2 gigawatts.

    2022: The bar is around 3.5 gigawatts.

    2023: The bar is around 8 gigawatts.

    2024: The bar is over 15 gigawatts, appearing to be the largest bar by a significant margin.

The chart shows a steady, but slow, increase in solar panel exports from China to Pakistan between 2017 and 2022, followed by a dramatic and sharp increase in 2023 and 2024.

Are you a queer, trans, or disabled person who is interested in ham radio but would struggle to pay the upfront fees of getting a license in the US?

I'm looking to pay for 3 people with one or more of these identities to get their ham radio licenses. More info at the link below.

As long as this post is up, the offer is good. If there's more than 3 people who reach out, I'll see about scrounging more up.

Played a few of the 2025 BASIC 10 liner competition winners with my girlfriend this evening.

It dawned on me that I have never actually touched a Commodore 64 before. Despite many hours coding in BASIC, I have only ever used an emulator.

There is probably a word for it in another language, but sometimes I long for a past that I will never be able to inhabit.

The competition entrants include code descriptions and comments, so I recommend downloading the "one big zip file" (~70MB) so you can have a really nice look through some clever code.

I enjoyed "sand-stormer", and another one whose name I cannot remember -- it was was the 3rd place in the 80 char line category 😅

Albanese has no option: sanction Israel or get rolled.

We've spoken.

@mdhughes Yeah, my brain was not intact sorry =_= thanks for helping. I was hoping to ask you about the applicability of nicclim viz making map segments for arrokoth later, though annoyingly my minimal example didn't even work (well, it was too slow on that laptop anyway). Hypothetically the experience should have been a more natural stepwise unfolding of (pic attached)

"map layout view" of nicclim with one 'house surrounded by grass' (tiles). There's a menu bar:
cursor mov addrem log layouts: Rect!
And interactor:
Command:..
Change Map TEST.TXT
Change Map M/HOUSEG
NICCLIM::COM-MAP-LAYOUT
And then a roughly 10x10 "pokemon house layout" in outlined squares of uppercase words like "FLOOR CHAIR NPC", "FLOOR CHEST" and so forth. A slightly different layout view of the otherone; the map is on the right, in the middle band, interactor is on the left, five mostly empty information panes along the bottom.
