"broken windows theory" is the theory that microsoft windows is fucking broken

What about a really nice BASIC interpreter for uxn? Seems to make sense to me--I know one already exists, but what about a nice fully-featured one?

Back before we had 24/7 always on network connections that could reach anywhere at any time, before you could even get a dial-up internet connection, you would maintain a list of systems that were notionally "next to" yours, as a set of names, bound to phone numbers.

You would set up a cron job, to periodically dial up some other machine, send out anything that needed to go to another system, and download anything it had for you.

A big system would typically store and forward data for any known caller. To get known, you'd talk to the admin of that system, and they'd set it up so you could connect.

Week-long delays to get an email from one system to another were not unknown.

may choose the arduino AVR as my platform--not sure what language to write it in yet, whether assembly or otherwise...

New video! I'm building a clone of the 1970s Electro Harmonix Echo Flanger guitar effects pedal from a kit.

Thumbnail for my video. A guitar effect PCB in the top part of the casing on my workbench with several tools and wires scattered next to it. The overlayed text reads "Echoflanger Clone Guitar Effect Build".

s are these unique beasts, clean windows into the raw interactivity of the languages and a mold to build it from. They are text-only-ish, though. Which is not always optimal. In my new piece, I look at the state of art in implementation REPLs and their customizabity, and try to advocate for using them still.

We should go back to UUCP bang paths for email. Yes they are much worse than DNS based lookup, but they have the advantage of being utterly incomprehensible to normies.

I love this mural of Harriet Tubman by artist Michael Rosato

harriettubmanmural.com

A mural by Michael Rosato on the side of a brick building next to a parking lot. The painting shows Tubman larger than life with blue skies and a river bank behind her, reaching through the wall she's broken through to offer a welcoming hand to those who would step through to freedom.

A mural on brick wall that looks as if the wall is partially crumbled, revealing a black woman reaching through to assist the viewer through the wall and onto a waterway with a rowboat.

Room 019: Glassmakers - Crystal Ball Closeup

Not yet a release, but I think it's functional enough for a beta of Ammonoid, a file manager in the style of MC for the Apple II. It aims to be simple, and implements VSDrive so disks images presented over serial (David Schmidt's ADTPro, Bobbi Manner's ProDOS-Utils or my own surl-server) are accessible. I'd like to hear your thoughts!

Floppy image available at https://www.colino.net/tmp/ammonoid.po

The Ammonoid interface showing two panes, listing a floppy on the left and /RAM on the right. I just copied a file from the floppy to the RAMdisk. Ammonoid's help screen, showing what is possible to do:

Left / Right: switch active pane
Up / Down: scroll in active pane
Enter: open in active pane
Esc: close directory in active pane
Space: select in active pane
A: select all in active pane
0: open in other pane
R: Rename file
D: Delete selected
N: Create directory in active pane
C: Copy selected to other pane
M: Move selected to other pane
I: File information

I am fondly remembering the days I had servers online named "nong", "boofhead", and "fuckchop" and at some point I switched to functional, dull names and I'm wondering why it all went wrong.

I hope you folks like hour-long deep dives about hacking the heck out of a plastic 8mm film digitizer to help rescue home movies. πŸ“½οΈ

...'cause that's what's coming soon! 🎞️
