been thinking about BASIC and how computers can be engrossing and fascinating
i feel like exploring how it might be possible to make computers simpler and easier to learn
what would that involve?
- a far simpler command line than bash?
- a different UI than a desktop metaphor?
- access to the internet?
- a suite of software for doing most simple computer tasks? games?
- a programming environment that encourages creativity and exploration?
- wonderful documentation?
- a dedicated target model of hardware?
honestly i am not sure i can yet properly express this concretely...
You learn a lot about most programmers by observing things like how line of code counters don't consider comments “code” despite them (in a healthy project) needing just as much maintenance as the code around them and for a library or complex algorithm, being equally useful to the code itself
@markmoxon incredible. truly good work.
I'm really proud to present my fully documented source code for Elite on the Commodore 64.
This is the original 1985 source, recently released by Ian Bell, with every single line of code explained.
It’s a thing of beauty. Enjoy!
Bluesky CEO Jay Graber says it is not "necessarily true" that Bluesky will always be free of advertising, and ads on the service could be "user intent-driven" (Maxwell Zeff/TechCrunch)

Libreboot 20241205 is compiling!
I was compiling the release, earlier, but stopped it because I decided to update the documentation first. However, I prefer for the updated docs to also be in the release archive itself.
Documentation is updated. Release page is written. Site will update when the tarballs are online.
I technically made it for 5 December 2024, thus Libreboot 20241205. I'm posting this just before midnight, UK time, and it's still early evening in North America, on December 5th.
"I see you were fond of playing the Devil's Advocate," Saint Peter said.
"Er... The name isn't really..."
"No, I know. 'Devil's Advocate' is a specific job, and that is allowed."
"So I'm good?"
"No, because you weren't doing that specific job, you were just being a dick online."
Was once again reminded of Ursula K. Leguin's daily schedule, and why this woman was an icon on every single level.

5:30 a.m. - wake up and lie there and think.
6:15 a.m. - get up and eat breakfast (lots).
7.15 a.m. - get to work writing, writing, writing.
Noon - lunch.
1:00-3:00 p.m. - reading, music.
3:00-5:00 p.m. correspondence, maybe house cleaning.

After 8:00 p.m. - I tend to be very stupid and we won't talk about this.
This was Le Guin's daily schedule first appeared in an interview she gave in 1988 (and more recently reappeared in Ursula Le Guin: The Last Interview and Other Conversations). Ursula Le Guin‘s daily schedule

Had my Game Boy Camera out taking pictures of the trams in Lisbon and caught a tram crashing into a van.

Do you have a @BlueSCSI with Wi-Fi? Do you use @jcs 's wonderful Wi-Fi Desk Accessory? Is your classic Mac running a non-English version of System 6 or 7 and do you wish the application did too?
You can help with the translation!
We're looking primarily for German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Danish and Japanese translations but any other are welcome too (I have French covered).
If you want to help, reply with a DM and I'll be in touch.
